What are AI agents?

The AI tools that most people use today are built to provide answers. You ask a question, it responds. But the work doesn’t stop there. For frontline teams, someone must take that information and act on it, often in the middle of a fast-paced environment.

AI agents change that. Agents move beyond simply responding to requests and begin to take action. These systems trigger tasks, route requests, and move work forward in real time. In this blog, we’ll break down what AI agents are, how they differ from traditional AI tools, and what they look like when applied to real frontline workflows.

What is an AI agent?

At a basic level, an AI agent is a system that can receive input, make decisions, and act. It typically follows a simple loop. It receives an input - like a voice request, system event, or signal from a device - uses logic and context to decide what needs to happen, then takes action, such as creating a task, sending a notification, or updating a system.

The ability to act is what sets AI agents apart from traditional AI tools.

What AI agents look like in real workflows

AI agents come into play as part of daily workflows, helping move tasks forward as they happen. Instead of waiting for someone to initiate a request, they can respond to events in real time or act autonomously based on pre-determined logic or instructions.

This shows up in everyday moments across the store. When a customer requests help, an agent can route the request to the right associate, assign ownership, and track the response. In a loss prevention scenario, a voice or system-triggered alert can notify the right team and log the incident automatically.

It also applies to information requests. When checking inventory, an associate can ask over their radio and get an answer in seconds, with the AI agent pulling information directly from the store’s systems and creating a follow-up task if needed.

In each case, the agent is coordinating the next step, reducing the need for manual follow-up so frontline workers can stay focused on high-value tasks.

Why this matters for frontline teams

Think about how often associates must stop what they’re doing to track something down: walking to the back to check inventory, calling a manager for help, or trying to figure out whether a request has been responded to.

In many cases, this isn’t occasional friction, it’s part of the job. Frontline workers spend up to 60 minutes per day navigating tools and communication systems instead of focusing on the task at hand.

Access to information plays a big role here. When associates have answers in the moment, they can respond more quickly, stay on the floor, and keep serving customers. That kind of responsiveness matters, with 64% of shoppers saying they’re more likely to visit a store where associates are knowledgeable.

With AI agents in place, associates don’t need to step away to find answers or follow up on requests. They can handle requests in real-time, with the information they need readily available. That changes how work gets done day to day. Less time is spent managing tasks and more time is spent helping customers.

What practical deployment looks like

Deploying AI agents comes down to how teams access and interact with them. Rather than introducing a separate system, agents can be accessed through existing tools like two-way radios. This is especially important given that roughly one-third of frontline workers don’t have access to a dedicated mobile device for work.

Solutions like SYNQ AI Radio connect associates to AI agents through their radios, allowing them to ask questions or trigger actions using voice, with responses pulled from store systems. This approach minimizes disruption by embedding AI into familiar workflows. The result is a deployment model that fits into existing operations rather than requiring teams to adapt to new ones.

Where AI agents make an impact

AI agents move work forward instead of just providing information. For frontline teams, that shows up in how tasks are handled in the moment, without relying on manual coordination behind the scenes. When built into existing workflows, they support faster responses and help teams stay aligned without extra steps or handoffs.
